World Container: In the tradition of album closers, this is a gem. More piano. Gord S must have been busy... the requisite beautiful ballad, and this one does not disappoint... Gord stretches his voice here... but in a good way.
Well, that's it!!! First impression of the album as a whole:
WOOOO!!!! To quote a famous(aren't they all??) Seinfeld episode, it's quite breathtaking. Gonna go for my second listen. Mav, please pass on my praise and everyone else's, to the greatest band in our land. This album just entrenched them even further...
Peace...

I was just going to say the exact same thing. I am immediately taking to this album, unlike the last few that took a few listens before I dug them. The Drop Off is probably one of my all time favorites already. As amazing as it sounds on the album, wait until you hear it live (if you haven't already) - its even better!

Last night I dreamt could be a Neil Young and Crazy Horse song, the vocals on the chorus for sure at least....

Although it is hard to stack up against the version I heard live and acoustic at Gord's solo show a few weeks back. I guess its the keyboard and the layered and delayed vocals at the end.
I may be in the minority, but I'm not too high on "The Kids Don't Get It.'
It's cuz your a Sundin fan....
I like it. it's a bit jangley - alt country alt-alt style??

This is awesome, thanks MAv and The Hip for the preview. I just finished listening to it all and Im still trying to keep it together, Im so excited, the 17th cant come fast enough. I absolutely love the album its amazing my early review:
Firstly Rink rules, that song rocks a live gem for years to come I hope. Fly is just off the charts one of the best songs they've ever done imo. Ocean is a great opener its solid, Luv(sic) as well. Kids Dont Get It is different and I like it, think it will take some more listens to fully appreciate it. Last Night.. is another early favorite as well Im really digging it. Anybody else think The Drop-Off sounds like it could slide onto Road Apples and fit right in? Well that's my early impressions..
Just awesome.. :thumb: :thumb:

Despite not showing my love for "Kids," I can honestly say that this is their best record since PP.

The piano in Ocean and World Container is so good. Those two songs are my faves so far. I agree with the statement about Pretend, I thought it would be a more of an acoustic song, but I'm definitely not complaining.
Way to go boys!!!!

I like it. Sounds a bit like the Clash, which could never be a bad thing.

Man ... they're even streaming it on www.thehip.com?? They're killing me. When I said I was gonna wait until the release date, I didn't know the BAND THEMSELVES would be previewing it a week early.
I can't access it at work anyway, so I have until tonight to make my decision.

"Pretend" would fit perfectly on a Gord solo album. But I definitely like it as a Hip tune.

I love the transition between The kids don't get it and Pretend. Using the same lyrcis seemed a little iffy to me at first, but I dont mind it.

Okay, so here is my first impression of the entire album (before the critical side of me emerges, which it will start within everyone once the initial shock is gone). The pure emotion of this album is phenomenal. Obviously, a song like "Rink" can't be too emotional, but then you remember Gords goalie history, and you realize why its emotional to him.
Piano addition. Wow. Hands down, the hilight for me is the cut "World Container". When I die, this song will be played at my funeral.
Thats just first impressions. The beginning of Fly and Luv(sic) remind me a lot of The Guess Who. Maybe thats just me though.

Overall this album is... different. That's not to say I don't think it's amazing, it's just so very different from anything they've ever done.
The only songs that I'm not too sure about are "Pretend" (for reasons previously stated) and "World Container" (I dunno... I think I just haven't warmed up to the group singing at the end... strikes me as a bit cheesy and the song seems to build to a climax for too long and drop off suddenly at the end).
It's funny, I feel bad posting anything the slightest bit negative but I have to try and counter-balance the excitement-bias. Either way, it's too early yet for me to judge clearly but after first listen the album is incredible. Congrats to the Hip for yet another gem, and for having the balls to do something so different.
