Greetings from Austin Texas,
I'm a big fan here in Texas and have made it to most of the local shows the last 10 years or so. I had a question I thought I might ask the more informed Hip Base here. I own both an Edirol digital 2 ch.audio recorder and an HD flash drive video camera (Canon), question is can I record audio and/or video at the show here tonight? It seems I have seen that audio is Ok with the band but I wanted to be sure and respectful of the bands wishes. Looking forward to another dose of The Hip as we fans down here only get few chances to see them. I have emailed all my friends and told them this is a must see....mind you I usually don't do that. I was at the ACL show as my uncle Roky Erickson was also performing....while watching the Hip I noticed one of our writer/critics from the local paper beside me, I leaned over towards him and said "so...you really do know good music"....he just smiled and we all enjoyed a fantastic show. Thanks in advance and see you there.

Well I'm sad to admit that the quality was so-so at best. I have a new Edirol 2ch and am not pleased with the onboard mics, also had some issues with the placement of the recorder and despite having the low cut on I got a bit much on the low end. I am almost ashamed to admit it but I am partner in a company that designs/builds pro audio (analog) recording gear...my good friend and partner was lead designer for Rupert Neve for 10 years and is simply amazing. If you are familiar with pro gear he did the entire Neve Portico line and the 5088 mixer as well as the Taylor guitar Expression system. I've just not had much time to get the desired outboard mics and do some toying with the Edirol. It was a rather last minute decision to try it and I guess I now know that the built in mics have limitations..as I should have expected. I am new to the 2ch "field" recording game and just have not had the time to find the groove with said gear. Now give me a mixer and a studio and I can fare pretty well! I did get to chat with John the f.o.h. man and he seems like a great guy, very friendly and a true analog guy like myself. I did manage to get a nice take on a recent Steve Earle show on his tour doing the songs of Townes Van Zandt, acoustic solo stuff is much easier. Thanks to all for the replys and helping out! As always the show was great and the sound/mix of the band was (as always in my exp.) was rock solid. Hopefully I will be able to get it together before we are again graced with a Hip show in Austin. :music

A so-so is better than no recording. I'll happily work on the audio and post it to our tracker for fans. Let me know..

Chris, I appreciate it. I took a look over at the other site and lets just say you guys are way serious....impressive to say the least! We have a full blown protools hd set up and all the gear at the office and we are getting more into the digital realm as it is vital today for the integration of the anolog/digital needs in studios thse days. We actually sold our latest design (The Komit Compressor) in the 500 series format to a Canadian company, Radial Engineering. My partner also did some other stuff for them that is pretty impressive as well and will likely be a game changer for those utilizing analog gear in the 500 format...we did a 500 rack with a built in 8 channel mixer onboard and IMO improved upon the current industry standard for the format. Mind you my title is "ringleader" and I tend to more of the business/marketing/management end. I know my way around a studio and have done a good bit of production work though primarily working on project management and creative direction...we have a wealth of world class engineers in Austin and I leave the nuts and bolts to them...however as I mentioned we have come to understand that it benefits us all if we educate ourselves to the current trends in the industry and though we learned from the "analogue" master it is vital to know the fine points of merging the digital realm with analog, as digital is here to stay. In the past we loaded up and ran down to the studio....now you can have the studio in a bathroom for christsakes! Being the married father of two kids also takes up a good bit of time and so I am unable to lock myself in a room and work at something with the fervor I once did....but I do get the joy of seeing my children pursue their passions like music and sports. I look forward to picking up some stuff from those more versed in the ins/outs of the field gear available these days as it does not only help with my own music jones it is something relevant to my line of work. The reason I purchased the HD camera and stuff is because I am working with a good friend and amazing artist here in town to start recording his sunday night acoustic gigs <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.jondeegraham.com/">http://www.jondeegraham.com/</a><!-- m --> check him out, I have a feeling you will dig his stuff...great storyteller and also one of my favs....and a Texas legend.
I thank you for your most gracious offer and will see if I can find some stuff minus the clanking of beer bottles or the screaming of a few ladies whom I think drank all the beer that once resided in said bottles! Hey, at least I picked up a few things and got to see one of my all time favorite bands! PS I would have sent a PM but my being a newbie would not allow it. :music

I should have read your previous post more closely to see that you've got the gear to get the post- work done.

The clanking of beer bottles and the screaming of ladies are part of the live experience. Your recording is a document of the event from where you were. As fans/collectors/hoarders we take it all. If you want to share your recording and need any help getting it out there let me know.
