Five Musicians, 15 Dates, 90 Songs, Millions of Fans, One Unforgettable Summer. The Tragically Hip’s Historic Tour Immortalized in New Documentary from Bell Media

– Production now underway on electric and emotional documentary from Banger Films and award-winning directors Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier (Manufactured Landscapes, Act of God, Watermark) –
– Documentary to roll out on multiple Bell Media platforms in 2017 –

November 1, 2016

TORONTO (November 1, 2016) – The Tragically Hip’s 2016 epic cross-Canada tour, culminating in a highly charged and powerful concert in their hometown of Kingston, Ont., captured the heart of the country. Bell Media is teaming up with Canada’s foremost chroniclers of popular music, Banger Films, in association with Shed Creative (a division of Universal Music Canada), and one of the country’s most celebrated documentary filmmaking teams, Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier, to take viewers on-stage, in the crowd and behind-the-scenes of this historic tour. Commissioned by Bell Media and coming to multiple Bell Media channels and platforms in 2017, MAN MACHINE POEM (working title) is a feature documentary that follows The Tragically Hip’s momentous cross-country tour after the band’s announcement that lead singer Gord Downie has incurable brain cancer.

The documentary event special will premiere exclusively across an array of Bell Media TV and on-demand platforms, including national pay service The Movie Network, leading specialty channel MUCH, and to a mass audience on Canada’s most-watched network, CTV, before moving exclusively to CraveTV.

“We are incredibly honoured to share this amazing moment in Canadian history with the band and viewers across the country,” said Randy Lennox, President, Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media. “MAN MACHINE POEM comes from a dream team behind the camera and we know they’ll show Canada a side of The Hip we’ve never seen before.”

“We have filmed hundreds of hours of footage from the tour and beyond,” said Scot McFadyen, co-founder of Banger Films. “This stands to be a powerful cinematic music doc that captures a nation’s love for a band whose music and lyrics embody the Canadian spirit.”

From visceral celebration of performances where the whole arena jumped in unison, to singular moments of appreciation, grief, and love, viewers will be given a unique perspective on this ambitious arena tour, which sold out in minutes, as well as the reactions from their devoted fans.

In stunning 4K, MAN MACHINE POEM will include select performances from the Man Machine Poem tour that took the band from Victoria, B.C. to Kingston, Ont., as they played close to 90 different songs from their albums through the years – a unique selection for each concert.

Capturing these iconic performances and the profound reactions from fans, the documentary encourages viewers to stop and reflect on the shared experience and collective appreciation for this music that somehow embodies what it means to be Canadian. MAN MACHINE POEM is the definitive document of The Hip’s final tour.

MAN MACHINE POEM (working title) is directed by Canadian documentary filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier (Manufactured Landscapes, Act of God, Watermark), and produced by Scot McFadyen (RUSH: BEYOND THE LIGHTED STAGE) and Sam Dunn (METAL: A HEADBANGER’S JOURNEY), in association with Shed Creative (a division of Universal Music Canada). Music Consultant is Tyson Parker, Bell Media. Production Executive is Robin Johnston, Bell Media. Corrie Coe is Senior Vice-President, Independent Production, Bell Media. Mike Cosentino is Senior Vice-President, CTV and Specialty, Bell Media. Tracey Pearce is President, Distribution and Pay, Bell Media. Randy Lennox is President, Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media. Elevation Pictures Corp. will distribute the film internationally and is planning a special theatrical release in Canada next year.

Unless that's hyperbole, "hundreds of hours of footage" is a hell of a lot of film to sift through. 15 shows at roughly 2.5 hours each doesn't even account for 40 hours. That leaves a lot of backstage and other footage they shot. I'm hoping they have some footage of pre-production discussion amongst the band regarding setlist construction. It would be interesting to see a back-and-forth on that.

Looking forward to this...

I was hoping they would do a documentary like this, PLUS a full concert release (even if it's just Kingston, properly edited and mixed). I went to the Bobcaygeon show and was truly let down by that film. Felt it was a total bore, to be honest, focusing too much on these aging rocker fans, and arranging the concert than it did the concert itself. The best way to re-live and demonstrate the experience is to show it in full. I feel like showing one song from every city won't really capture the feeling we all had seeing specific shows. But I guess I'll reserve judgement until I see it. I'm just not a compilation guy though. "That Night in Toronto" and the Vault series are awesome though.

if you see some clown at the vancouver shows or edmonton 1 dancing and screaming his head off holding on to a PEI flag, that's me.

 Most of the aging rocker fans featured are (or were) active on this site!

Was anybody interviewed for the Banger Film doc? Since the fans were such a big aspect of the MMP tour, I was wondering if they would make that a part of the doc, or whether its just going to be about the Hip. In a way, I would prefer the latter, since the [aging  ] fans were already featured in Bobcaygeon.

i'm at a rock show at the danforth music hall last night(band called gov't mule)
during the set break i went out on the street to find a bathroom that had no line up
did that then am hanging around chatting to a great old friend who i only see at shows
we say our good byes and i start walking back in and i pass this couple walking by fast, arm in arm
i had a quick look at them and it looked like gord downie
they walked past and i thought i had better take a second look

they stop....and i look at him eye to eye and sure enough it IS gord downie
as soon as i knew it was him, and he knew i knew, i said "i love you" LOL
he asks my name and i say steve and then i continue on walking back to the venue

This is cool news. The potential is so high for a terrific movie. I don't mind at all the fact the Bobcaygon Film was "fan" based. There are so many important elements (mix, editing, content, story)...with the people and companies involved I don't see how this can be anything but a wonderful movie. CAN'T WAIT!

Maybe they'll interview some ticket bots and scalpers, who were an even bigger aspect of the tour.

A huge +1 to this post.

Also, with the heat of the hip right now, there has never been a better time to issue a "completist" box set. Here's hoping they don't announce they have hundreds of hours of footage and reduce it down to a single feature film.

A multi-episode series is my bet. With hope for a dvd release of as much footage as is feasible.

Whatever we see, it is better than nothing and I am thankful that Banger films is at the helm.

Here are two short (very short) "documentaries" of the fans I shot moments before the Kingston show

Walking to my seat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19Cy3AuqtTs
Passing a Canadian flag overhead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGyk_d2GijA

And one that my friend shot of the fans leaving the venue:

I still haven't watched the CBC broadcast. Saving it up for a special night.

My friend was interviewed by banger staff while in line at the Kingston show. He was sporting the red leaf hip jersey and asked about 5-7 questions. He had to sign a release if his interview was used in the documentary.

Even though I am one of those "aging rockers" featured in the Bobcaygeon film I do agree that it was a letdown. This is an opportunity to do it right. Any release date estimates for this project?
