i suck really bad at writing album reviews, so i am just going to give my personal opinion on each song. i have heard the cd 10 or so times now, so here we go:

heaven is a better place today

this is a good rocking tune. i didn't care for it at first but now that i have heard 5 or 6 times, it is really growing on me. i am digging the electric sound. gords voice is a little high, and that is the one thing i don't care for.

summer is killing us

meh. this song really doesn't do much for me. i need more time to try and get a groove for it.

gus the polar bear

good funky tune. again.. more electric. i picture a really cool light show with this song.

vaccination scar

hands down, the best song on the disc. we all know it. i still thing this would make a kick ass show opener.

it can't be nashville every night

good rhythm. i find myself tapping along with this song. upbeat tune.. i like it.

new orleans is beat

a slower song. i don't think i care for it too much. there is something about it that i don't really care for, but i can't quite put my finger on it. it is almost as if some of the lyics don't flow very well. also, and maybe it is jusy my computer, but gord vocals seem to be mixed a little low.

you're everywhere

a mid tempo song. good beat. you can really hear paul/gord s singing backup. their vocals have come a long way. for some reason, this osng reminds me of tiger the lion. maybe it is just the tempo. i dunno. great song tho.

as makeshit as we are

GREAT beat to this. not too much to say. but this is a good tune. i love it.

mean streak

another mid tempo song. i don't care for it at all. moving on...

the heart of the melt

up beat and more good guitar work from bobby. rocking tune. i like it. not my favorite, but still damn good. gord's voice is a little irritating to me, tho.

one night in copenhagen

"good fucking luck" :lol: for some reason that line makes me laugh. i don't know what else to write. it is a good tune, tho.

we have heard this song already and we all know it rocks hard.

this album is really really good. bobby's guitar work is great and the sounds take me back to the road apples or fully competely era.

the cd takes a few listens to really get in to it, but it eventually rock your face. very good cd. 4/5 stars.

No sense commenting on the three singles, we all know them well... so the others... well...

GUS .. My favourite on the album, great lead guitar, real nice flow... it is WHAT is Road Apples about this album
It Can't Be Nashville Everynight Decent song... pretty upbeat... if subsidized to do so, I would say it feels like a Music @ Work tune
If New Orleans Is Beat Melo-dramatic... Gord's trying to say something, but I can't quite figure it out yet...
You're Everywhere ... WOW... slightly different lyrics from Ballroom, same fundamental message... it's good to hear that familiar Hip song structure and lead guitar... damned if THIS isn't actually my favourite...
As Makeshift As We Are ... my least favourite song on the album, but still strong, very strong... good lyrics...
Mean Streak Why that MTV moron compared Nickelback and The Hip is beyond me, and this song will completely define the strong differences between the two... decent rhythm, solid and relaxing lead, and lyrically magnificent
The Heart Of The Melt It's already been said in other posts, but definitely a very aggressive song, reminiscent of Fire in the Hole... another tune with a time change in it...
One Night In Copenhagen Very Pop-Rockish... a predictable vocal melody, but still something to jam out too...
Are We Family Very happy, nice to listen to when you're drunk... sounds like Oh Honey + Forest Edge divided by two... if that makes any sense
Goodnight Josephine Originally I wasn't the biggest fan of this one-time bootleg, but with studio quality and post production, its' rockin'... rockin' real hard...

All that must be said about this album:
-Bobby plays a bigger part than the last two albums
-Every song on this album hit me right away
-It does have a Road Applish feel to it
-If you haven't heard it yet, hold on, 'cause you're in for a kickass album

I dunno das-hip. I listened to Makeshift, and I think it's one of better songs on it. As for the rest of the CD. Simply amazing. This is probably my favorite CD since Phantom Power....maybe even Trouble at the Henhouse. Just the perfect mix of old and new.

yes I enjoy this song also... always wonder why people don't dig the slower tunes by the hip....maybe not The Rules... or whatever but songs like WE ARE FAMILY, GOOD LIFE, TORONTO #4, PINES, GEMS etc... are just cool tunes in their own way... sure you can't jump off the stage like TIGER or FIRE IN THE HOLE.....with them... but just listen.....

Shannon brought this to my attention, and I have to say I agree: the songs are relatively short, no?

I was expecting Kasper to give the guys long play outs and jams ala Nautical Disaster, but it appears the 7 minute Audioslave style tracks weren't on Adam's agenda this time around.

I'm looking forward to the boys stretching these out on the road.

I don't understand how you can call yourself a hip fan and turn around and write a review where you didn't like half the songs. Your an idiot. If you were a hip fan you would appreciate all the songs for what they are, just cause it doesn't rock like the overplayed NOS, doesn't mean it's not a good song. Some of the Hip's best songs are slower ones....Flamenco.

Broaden you horizons past NOS and you might find that you will love the hip.

Being a hip fan does NOT per definition mean you love each and every song of theirs. He listened to the album and he's posting HIS review of the songs - its HIS personal opinion. You can disagree with it as much as you like but let him post what he wants to.

I think being a fan of a band does not mean you have to enjoy every song. I am a big fan, of the hip, U2 and Pearl Jam and there are songs from all three bands that I would call weak or just crappy. That doesn't make one a non-fan.

I personally think it would be tough being a fan of a band and enjoying every single song they wrote. There has to be at least one weak song in the bunch.
