Is there anything better than cranking a great live album, feeling the energy and screaming along with the masses? For my money, Joe Cocker's Woodstock version of "A little help from my friends" is the greatest live song on record.
Something about the romance, vibe and atmosphere of that era, that history, that late summer moment on a soggy New York farm with Joe forcing that song from his soul... it really grabs me.
So what's your favourite live song?

mike doughty (formerly of Soul Coughing) has a live version of the song "Move On" from 06/05/2004 in New Jersey that is phenomenal if only for the placement of mics where it was recorded.
there's some hoots and hollers that seem to come from just behind you that really add to its "liveness" without killing the mood of the performance
the damn tune will also easily be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. might be hard to find, but worth the search

I have to agree with Steve on Joe Cocker's "A Little Help from my Friends". That's just a classic performance from beginning to end. Absolutely timeless.
Other honorable mentions:
1. The Who's performance at the Monterey Pop festival when they smashed their instruments to pieces, and as Gord says "where some people cheered, and some people looked away."
2. U2 performing "One" at Slane Castle 2001. Bono's father had just passed away 2 days earlier, and the performance of this tune is incredibly moving. The emotion on Bono's face suggests he's singing directly to his dad. Earlier in the set after an equally stunning version of "Kite", Bono thanks his dad for giving him 500 pounds to help finance the band's first demo recording way back in the day.
I could think of more, but I'd be on here all day.

I really "get" R.E.M.'s Perfect Circle live on Tourfilm 89. It's so sombre and melancholy and absolutely heartrending. Also their version of Southern Central Rain on the Jools Holland show in 2001 just sounds like Michael is bursting at the seams with emotion...you'd think the 18 year old song had been written the day before because he was so "into" it.
Can't nominate a BEST EVER song, but these are ones that always make me stop in my tracks and listen for four solid minutes, captivated.

Mike Doughty is the man :thumb:
I'm glad to meet another fan of him and Soul Coughing!
As for the live song, I'd say Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching - Live @ Red Rocks

If we're talking album. I have few live albums, and Fever by Garth Brooks on the double live album can get me nuts. Driving down the road singing along and dancing in my seat lol.
If we're talking live in concert. Gosh.....I've seen SO many concerts, it's hard. Maybe "Saturday's All Right for Fighting" by Elton John! WOW! I also have seen a kick ass version of Led Zepplin's 'Rock And Roll' done by Collin Raye and "If The House Is Rockin", can't remember who did it originally, but live by Vince Gill totally rocks.
OF course any bit fast paced hit of the person you're seeing like KISS doing "Rock and Roll All Night" has gotta be a great live song. They just give a great show in general!
