Hi!
I've been a hip fan since Up to Here and I've been playing guitar on and off for 6 years now. I was wondering how you guys like to play the hip songs... I know I love the acoustic ones (Bob, ABAC, Scared, 38 years old, wheat kings...) but also like to play electric but I feel that alone it is harder to give a good rendition of the more "electrified" songs...
What are the songs you like to play the most??
and just wondering if anyone is in a Hip tribute band... would love to go see you if you are around montreal
cheers! :jump

I don't find hip songs difficult to cover well if you have enough guys to pull it off and actually spend some time figuring out what each member actually plays. That being said, there are some songs that can be pulled off as a three-piece with a little creativity. Among my favourites in this sense are Grace, Too, Little Bones, Three Pistols, Music @ Work, 700ft. Ceiling, and Locked.....
I think the trouble with playing a lot of hip songs in a band setting is that everyone gravitates towards the music in the foreground and ignores either Paul or Rob, or they over-simplify things.
That being said, I agree with you.... on guitar alone, you are quite simply missing too many elements of the original music for it to sound correct... or at least with as much enthusiasm.
Try the Road Apples album start to finish.... it's your best bet for being satisfied with only your trusty electrified axe.

I'm pretty keen on 38 Years Old since it lends itself so well to solo acoustic performance. Titanic Terrarium sounds killer on a decent resonator...
Electrically, I have an absolue ball playing Emperor Penguin....get a little delay going, and turn up that reverb....the delicate melody of the verse progressions transitioning to the power of the chorus gets me all geeked up....
Giftshop is also fun if you can somewhat match the the distorted sound they use...that cut has great energy....
When I still had my Strat, my buddies (one played bass, one played a Les Paul) and I would sit around and play those few measures from Last of the Unplucked Gems for extended periods, improvising, letting our individual creativity take us (kinda like the boys used to do when they played it in concert)....

Its fun to pull out acoustic versions of Grace, N.O.I.S., and Long Time Running, around the fire pit...I can never do the tunes the proper justice they deserve, but people enjoy them just the same.
