With the exception of Nickelback, I totally agree with that comment. When I first saw the lineup yesterday, only a small handful of bands stuck out as having any musical relevance at all: the Hip, OLP, Sammy Roberts, Blue Rodeo, Tegan & Sara, BNL, and that's pretty much it. I also think it's cool that Gordie Lightfoot and Bruce Cockburn are playing, but in all honesty, the rest of that lineup just plain sucks. Funny how everytime a big even like this is held in Canada, they always end up padding the lineup with the most washed-up artists they can find. It's embarrasing. I'm surprised Sass Jordan, Trooper, and Loverboy aren't on the bill as well.

But seriously though, where the hell are The Weakerthans, the Arcade Fire, Sarah Harmer, Sloan, Kathleen Edwards, K-OS, the Constantines, Broken Social Scene, Ron Sexsmith, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Feist, Death From Above 1979, Rheostatics, Hawksley Workman, Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir, 54-40, Cowboy Junkies, Lowest of the Low, and Daniel Lanois. Am I missing anybody?

A lot of those artists have made prior commitments and there's only so many spots for bands to play early, then go to their previously scheduled gig.

and also how poor is the international contribution? Motley Who and Deep Purple? C'mon. London is flooded with international artists, Paris has Sheryl Crow, Muse and the Cure, Berlin has Audioslave, Green Day, Lauren Hill, Rome has Faith Hill. Whether you like those bands/artists or not, they're big names. But then again, this entire concert was organized in about 15 mins over lunch, so what can you expect? Canada's just lucky that we have bands like the Hip and BNL that will support absolutely anything.

My sources inform me, also, that Geldof required artists, like people wanting tickets, to pass a quiz before being accepted. Every band had to put their heads together and figure out how to spell "Africa."

Consequently, Billy Talent did not make the lineup -- so there is a silver lining after all.

But seriously, the lineup is paltry.What will be interesting is seeing how the fans mix.......are Celine's soccer moms gonna get along with Simple Plan's angsty be-pimpled quasi-punks?

I personally think the whole premise of Live 8 is a pile of crap as well. The goal of spreading "awareness", not raising money seems rather inane. Everyone who doesn't live in a hole (and even some that do) know that there is poverty all over the world, especially in Africa. Its not like the people attending this conference are going to become activists or anything....those with the moral impetus or like for social disobedience are already doing that. Quite frankly, we should gouge the apathetic for alms whenever we have the opportunity.

I'm sure some of it had to do with prior commitments, etc... and I understand they needed some big names. But if they wanted some serious Canuck star power, I'm sure they could've gotten some artists who are a little more relevant, like say Neil Young, Alanis Morrisette, or Avril Lavigne. Now personally I'm not a fan of the latter two, but let's face it, they're both huge internationally and they'd draw a big crowd. It's too bad Sarah McLachlan is already playing the Philly show, cause she'd be perfect for the gig in Barrie. As for the American acts on the bill, I think it's beyond ridiculous that Motley Crue and Deep Purple are playing. I understand that the organizers had little time to work with and that they pretty much scrambled to get this thing to happen, and it's great that they pulled it off, but I think they should've aimed a little higher and gotten somebody like Springsteen or Pearl Jam. Could you imagine the Hip, the Boss, Neil Young, and Pearl Jam at the same show? Now THAT'S a f**kin concert!

Oh well. At least we have a better lineup than the Philly show.

As to Sarah Harmer, I think she's performing here at Calgary at the time. A few of those acts mentioned are going to be here for the folk music festival.

Basically I see Gordie and Celine on the same bill, which means 'Dance off 2005'.

Of course, Celine is too good to actually show up for the concert, instead we can watch her music video's on the big screen. Think we can still find a way to bottle her off the stage?
