my 2nd car, which is a 1986 chevy cavalier needs a new muffler...since i know jack-shit about cars, how much should i be paying for this? i dont' want to get ripped off

depends if you onlyu need a muffler or pipes too or catolitic convertor + labor
go to a well in the states we have few that just really do mufflers monroe and coles there are more

I got a cheap muffler for like 40 dollars put on my old car a few years ago.

i just got my muffler replaced for $100, but that was a performance muffler, so a regular one shouldnt be that much..Got it done at Midas btw.
On my last car (88 tempest) it needed everything and it was going to cost like $800.00 so it all depends if you only need a muffler. Call a place and see if they give FREE estimates.

muffler itself shouldn't cost you more than $100, it's the labour and welding charges that will get ya... most shops are like $85/hr... so a straightforward muffler replacement should not cost you more than $200. But like everyone said, if they gotta do cat-back or replace anything else then you're paying for piping and more labour.
also, check what the difference in cost is between a stock replacement and a universal muffler (on my car a stock replacement would have ran $350, my universal dynomax muffler was only $100)

hey..thanks for all the advice..just got back from budget brake and muffler, and they charged me TEN BUCKS...turns out all they needed to do was weld it back together, and i didn't need a new one...still though..i'm impressed it was only ten bucks..

86 cavaliers are where it is at. I just had to replace the gasket covers and transmission in mine. wo0t.
