Allison a Leaf!
#1

Well, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Jason Allison yesterday. An excellent acquisition. The addition of Allison and Jeff O'Neill will certainly replace the aging Gary Roberts and Joe Nieuwendyk who have signed with the Florida Panthers. However, I would have much rather seen the Leafs sign one of the defencemen that were available - Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer, Adrian Aucoin, Sergei Gonchar, etc. When Bryan McCabe is your best defenceman, you're in trouble.

You think Adrian Aucoin would have made the Leafs Cup contenders? For $4 million per season? Yikes.

No, but they needed an addition on defence. Beyond the first defensive pair, they are pretty weak.

Apparently you've never stood in front of a Karel Pilar snapshot...or an Aki Berg backhand....or even a Carlo Colaiacovo wrister....and who can honestly say they want to feel the wrath of a Brendan Bell hard pass!!!!

That's a solid D if I've ever heard of one.....(insert the most sarcastic smiley face you've ever seen here)

Now, I'm not about to say we should have paid $4MM for Adrian Aucoin...but we certainly need some some help on the back line.

I think Colaiacovo will one day be a good NHL defenceman...that day just isn't today. He needs another season in St. John's. Berg should not be in the NHL. He is a plug. I worry every time he has the puck. Pilar and Berg will be the second pair for Toronto - that's just sad. I can understand why they cut Leetch loose, but he was their only tried and true big name defenceman. Kaberle can play when he shoots - but I think he averages about 0.2 shots per game. McCabe has a great shot but is prone to brain farts in his own end. In essence, I agree with you, Mr. Goulet. (Oh look, a bighorn. That's why I come up here. Naaatuuure! Goulet).

Didn't the Baby Leafs move here to Toronto starting this season? I heard that they were going to play in the Ricoh (Coliseum/Arena...can't remember) after the Roadrunners were recalled out west.....

The St. John's Maple Leafs have moved to Toronto and been rechristened as the Toronto Marlies (a reference to the expired OHL team, the Toronto Marlboroughs, a reference to the Duke of Marlborough, who was -- what -- a governor general or something?, once upon a time).

They will be playing at Ricoh Coliseum, which is a great place to watch a game if you get the chance (I took in a couple of Toronto Roadrunners games in their first season there, and thoroughly enjoyed it).

A little Marlie history (courtesy torontomarlies.com):

Quote:Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, a group of Toronto sportsmen decided to form a new athletic club in the downtown core. The name they chose was "The Toronto Marlborough Athletic Club."

The club was named after the Duke of Marlborough who's family name was Churchill. The Duke was an uncle to Sir Winston Churchill, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain.

In 1903, the club secretary Fred Waghorne wrote to the Duke of Marlborough in England for permission to use the storied name and crest

I imagine there will be liberal movement between the two clubs during the season, allowing players a sniff of the big league to use as a motivational tool...Colaiacovo will likely start with the big club (behind McCabe, Kaberle, Klee, Berg, and Pilar), but will likely be the first one outed should the big club get off to a bad start.

As for the Ricoh...I agree it's a great place to watch hockey...

I love your sig. It puts a smile on my face every single time I see it. Please don't ever change it.

I think the Leafs should go after Karyia and Lindros and team them up with Allison, and have the Concussion line. See who gets rocked the hardest first, and misses the year......Great line if they could all survive the year though, but I think they're all centers no?? maybe not Karyia
