I thought I would start the arduous task of trying to organize live versions of the songs on the new release. I am open for suggestions on how to do this…first I thought of a poll, but come on…who can do that? Then I thought of a topic for each song and give all of you a chance to recommend your favorite versions. I’d like to get the best quality recordings…so it will certainly be a community effort. This could take some time on Jeremy’s FTP site…and when it is done it would be great to put it up on Chris’ site. What do y’all think? Ya or nay?

ya its a good idea but it can be messy. ask lance about possibly creating a sub-forum with one thread for each song and collect peoples' votes that way

I would narrow each song down to 4 or 5 versions each and then do a poll for each song. Of course, a few songs are a bit easier than others:
Fiddler's: never been performed
Highway Girl: I think this one (and possibly New O) is pretty much a no-brainer
No Threat: not a whole lot of options on this one!

Not sure if either are no-brainers, your prawly bankin on the Roxy versions as the sure winners i take it? For H.G. I would be inclined to pick that Coyotes version myself, and theres been atleast well 10 versions of New O I'd say'd be in the running;

Not to be a naysayer, but I think this is an impossible task.
I just saw a list of 10 versions of NOIS above, and I have no idea what any of them sound like off the top of my head, or even if I've ever heard them.
I don't profess to be super mr. hardcore know it all, but I feel like I know a bit about the hip and this seems incredibly daunting.
Wasn't this the reason that the Hip released the entire Cobo show for LBU instead of trying to cull a live version of greatest hits.

What if everyone chose their favourite versions of each song, and pm'd or emailed them to one person.

Cool idea, ya it would be hard but if everyone just suggests their favourite version of each song, it won't get too crazy.

Going in order of the track listing, everyone could suggest their favourite version of said track via PM to joshwayy. He could set a short timeline for the voting. After that, I can easily host the tracks in MP3 on my site for everyone to download. Worst case scenario is a lot of fans get to hear some favourite versions of the greatest hits. Best case is we get through this and come up with a killer compilation. I've seen this done on other fan sites... Pearl Jam fans even did it with video, and put out album-by-album compilation DVDs of the best live performances of each song!

Sweet. I was going to create a topic for each song and give a 3 day voting period... get some suggestions... poll them up so we have majority rule, but I like MAv's idea better. Would you put up the submission forms here on on thehip.com? I would be more than happy to tabulate ballots.
There are certainly others more skilled at pulling something like this off than I.

Count me in for lending a hand however is needed. I'll be away from the computer for a week starting Saturday, but after that I have a bunch of time to kill before I start student teaching. So...let me know what I can do to help get this off the ground. :thumb:
