World Container (TM) - Speculation
#1

Hey everybody, I haven't checked all of the World Container pages (31!), so maybe this has been discussed already...but I was wondering what everybody else thought about the significance of the cover and name of the album?

The graphic of the globe on the cover is exactly like the logo of the World Bank (I discovered this when I was doing a school research paper on Free Trade last week). Is the title some kind of swipe at the World Bank and their actions? Plus the "TM" after the title, they seem to be making fun of the business world or something.

Maybe I'm reading into it only what I want to see. But it seemed likely, since the Hip seem like a rather socially-conscious band and they play benefit concerts and whatnot.

Perhaps you are reading too much into it, my thoughts on the ™ are to add to the artwork of mimicking what you would see on a real package sent by mail.

Just my thoughts.

some guy a couple weeks age told me it was a misprint and the album was actually supposed to be called world contain her...

Was the guy who told you that Gord Downie? Cause that's what he told me at the Phoenix before he started singing World Container.

I think there's an obvious corporate dig going on with the whole World Container packaging.

Also, something which I never thought too much about before, "world container" is an oxymoron (or some other kind of contradiction in terms, if my nomenclature is not exact enough) -- nothing can contain the world, because that would require it to be larger and more comprehensive than the world, but in order to exist, it would have to be within the world, and therefore, less comprehensive than the world.

... except, if by world, you literally meant "planet earth", in which case, the universe could be the comprehensive world container ...

anyway, I haven't fully sorted that thought out, but I think there must be some metaphysics, as well as politics, socioeconmics, and poetics, involved, or else it wouldn't be the Hip. I don't think you could ever say that the title, or any lyric, or any song, is about X and be done with it.*

Striking similarities, no? THEY ARE BOTH DEPICTIONS OF THE EARTH!!!! With Circular lines!!

Seriously though, obviously some kind of business parody going on with the cover. And the World Bank might be referred to as a kind of "World Container"....they say they're about solving poverty, but that's very debatable...many people beleive they just represent business interests and work to keep the poor down, or "contained", as it were.

I have uncovered the secret code.

No one on the internet has commented on the significance of the cover/name at yet that I can see.

If it's not about that, then I would LOVE to know what it IS about!!!

I can honestly say it's the only song I've ever heard which discusses the sensitive topic of a circle jerk. Let alone Christians in said circle jerk.

What was this thread about again? Oh yeah... trademark on the globe... corporate statement... copyright the world..... sure thing......... Why coconut cream? 40 Gallons??!!?!?? I can't compete with that!!!

There's a reason why the topic isn't discussed. :thumb: It's deplorable and the song is the worst thing The Hip have done in their career. Even if it is in gest, which I assume, it's not funny and I'm not laughing. If it's supposed to be a song to make people uncomfortable about their homophobia, or if it has no real purpose other than to joke about circle jerks, it's still deplorable either way.
